Christmas Light Installation in Exhibition Park

Christmas light installation in Exhibition Park and the older streets around the park north-west of downtown.

Exhibition Park is the old city's porch neighbourhood: brick and frame houses from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, many with full-width front porches, steep front gables and big trees out front. The display that works here is usually the porch and the main eave lit warm white, a wrapped porch column or two, and the front-yard maple wrapped from the ground. Gables without eavestroughs are lit only where trim allows a clip; nothing is fixed into the brick. Lots are narrow and side yards tight, which makes ladder placement and cord routing the slow part of the job, and the overhead service drop to the house is located before anyone climbs, because ESA's three-metre clearance applies to every ladder and every tree. The Exhibition Park houses are close to downtown, so many owners time the switch-on for the Mayor's Tree Lighting in Market Square. Takedown is the first dry days of January, since the shaded north sides of these narrow lots hold ice longer.

Frequently asked questions

Do you cover Rockwood, Fergus and Elora?

Yes. Rockwood, Fergus, Elora and the countryside between them are quoted on the same terms as the city. Longer drives are planned into route days so rural installs are not squeezed in at dusk.

Are the electricity prices the same outside the city?

The OEB's regulated prices are the same across Ontario. Guelph and Rockwood are served by Alectra; other townships may have a different distributor with different delivery charges, which are on your own bill.

Do heritage rules apply in Fergus and Elora?

Centre Wellington has its own heritage register and designations, separate from Guelph's. Seasonal clip-on lights do not alter a building; for permanent lighting on a stone downtown building or a designated house, check with the Township first.
