Permanent Roofline Lighting in Guelph

Permanent lighting answers the question every Guelph owner of a two-storey house asks in November: do I really have to go up there again. It goes up once, stays all year, and is used far more than six weeks of it.

A permanent system is a run of individually controllable LED nodes set inside a low-profile aluminum channel. The channel is fastened under the drip edge, along the fascia or behind the eavestrough line, colour-matched to the trim so that from the sidewalk in daylight it reads as part of the house. A controller indoors or in the garage plugs into a GFCI-protected outlet and connects to your Wi-Fi; an app sets colours, patterns, brightness and schedules. It is a product made and certified for permanent outdoor installation, which matters, because ESA's guidance is clear that ordinary seasonal strings are not meant to stay up all year.

What it does

  • Christmas. Red and green, warm white, a slow chase or a static C9 look, set to come on at dusk and go off at eleven.
  • Every other occasion. Orange for Halloween, colours for Diwali, Lunar New Year, Canada Day or Pride, team colours for a Gryphons or a Storm game. Changing it takes a minute on the phone.
  • Every other night. A soft warm white along the eave that lights the driveway, the steps and the front of the house, which is what most owners end up using it for most of the year.

Which Guelph houses suit it

The cleanest installs are the long, continuous aluminum eaves of the 1990s and newer streets: Kortright Hills, Pine Ridge, Westminster Woods, the streets off Clair and Gordon, and the east-end subdivisions. There the channel follows the eave in straight runs, the garage peak and upper peak are traced cleanly, and the feed comes from the garage. Older houses can work too, especially brick bungalows and storey-and-a-halfs with wood or aluminum soffits, but a stone house with no soffit to speak of is usually better served by seasonal lights.

Heritage properties

On a house in the Brooklyn and College Hill Heritage Conservation District or one designated individually, a permanent channel is a fixed attachment. The install is planned to fasten only into wood soffit or fascia, never into stone or mortar, to sit out of view from the street and to come off without a trace, and you are asked to confirm with the City's heritage planning staff before it goes up. That conversation costs nothing and avoids a problem later.

Power and the electrical side

Most systems run from an existing exterior or garage outlet protected by a GFCI. Where there is no outlet in the right place, a new one is electrical work. ESA requires electrical work for hire to be done by a Licensed Electrical Contractor, who files a notification of work with ESA and can give you a Certificate of Acceptance afterward; that part is arranged and quoted separately and you are given the contractor's ESA licence number. Running cost is small: LED nodes at warm white draw little, and schedules keep them off when nobody is looking. The cost page works through an example at the OEB's November 2026 prices.

Through a Guelph winter

The channel sits under the eave, out of the way of the snow that slides off the roof and the ice that forms in the trough, and nothing is clipped to the gutter for snow or ice to tear off. Nodes are sealed against moisture. Because there is nothing to take down, the lights are already there for the long dark of January and February, when a warm white over the driveway is welcome.

Frequently asked questions

Can you see it in the daytime?

Barely. The channel is slim and colour-matched to the fascia or soffit, and on most south-end houses it disappears into the trim line. You will see it if you look for it from the driveway.

What if I sell the house?

It stays with the house, like a fixture, and the app account is handed over to the buyer. Some owners treat it as a feature of the listing; it is your choice and your agreement with the buyer.

Will it work with the eavestrough guards I have?

Usually yes, because the channel sits under the drip edge or on the fascia rather than on the guard. The site visit confirms the mounting line on your house.
